Money, wealth, intellect, power, immortality. Charles Marston wants it all and when his friend and colleague, Matthew Baker tells him of the life and gruesome death of Dr Faustus, a man who made a deal with the devil and for a short time held the world in his hands he knows what he needs to do to get it. After making a pact with Mephistopheles, Charles and Matthew agree that in return for immortality and power beyond their wildest dreams they will cause an uprising and allowing Lucifer to return to what he believes is his rightful place as ruler of the Seraphim. Only the Seraphim and the Nephilim, mortals who represent the heavens on earth, stand in their way.

Growing up in a commune of artists Annie Sadler ambles through her relatively mundane life happily until a chance encounter with Eli, the boy who has moved into her local church leads her into a world where not only are myths and legends true but where she finds she has a place amongst them.
