Our exploitation of resources, our nuclear wars and our greed upset the balance our world depended on. The polar ice caps melted and the rapid rise in sea levels, now known as The Surge, began. Overnight, cities were destroyed and those that survived were forced to move inland. Adapt or die was the chance we were given.

300 years later the world has adapted. Some have moved back to the coastlines, where the ancient ruins remain as a testimony of humanities’ past transgressions.

17-year-old Amarina is a water bender. It is the result of a rare genetic mutation from an accidental live vaccine handed to her ancestors before The Surge. There are others too; earth benders, air benders and fire benders. The four elements that keep this world in sync are now within the genetic codes of a minority. But it must be kept a secret. Anyone who possesses these powers is taken. Taken to stadiums to fight for a sick entertainment, an example of the last shred of greed and prejudice that remains from before The Surge.

Up until now, Amarina has been able to keep her secret. Living on Australia’s coastline, she is just a school student by day and a water bender in training by night. Her father has made sure that no one will ever know. Until one fateful day that will change her destiny forever. The day she was taken. Now she must fight. Adapt or die, just like her ancestors did 300 years before her.
