Edward Anthony Masen dreamed for all of his life to become a soldier, after turning 3 his dreams were at a high peak. His father had become one. But one sunny day his father Edward Sr., and mother Elizabeth brought a surprise home. A little sister.

The Spanish influenza hit Chicago Illinois like a bus, Edward lost his father in the first wave. The second wave got them, at age 18 Edward was diagnosed along with his mother and his baby sister Beatrice aged 15. The passing of his mother affected both children, but a promise their doctor made to their mother put them in a completely different situation.
