Bella Bailey is at a crossroads in her life. She has been named senior captain of the girl's swim team at her school, East Georgia University, and has one thing in mind- to become the next swimmer from her school to have the fastest time to qualify for the US Open Swimming Championships, followed by the US Olympic trials and then hopefully on to the Olympics.
The friendships that she has with the other members of her team, especially her best friends Amelia and Katy, and her boyfriend Nick, become strained when she meets new senior transfer student Caleb, also a swimmer and previous captain of his swim team in New York City. Even though Nick and Bella are perfect for each other, Bella feels Nick is becoming distant and turns to Caleb for support, and even though she is still babying a shoulder injury, Caleb shows her how she can overcome her injury while focusing on her sport and trying to get through her senior year. Caleb takes Bella to New York and she learns the real reason why he transferred to a different school and he shows her why she needs to stay focused on her dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer, as well as the fact that she has different options in case she doesn't make the Olympic team. At the end of the school year she has to decide where her heart truly lies: with the person who showed her a different perspective on her career path, or with the sport she treasured her entire life.
