"Amber, hurry up" screamed my mom. I am so excited right now, I get to go to a summer camp ran by Christine Sinclair! I can't believe it! I got selected out of thousand of girls from all across Canada to go to this camp hosted by the captain of the Canadian women's team!
But for some reason I can't seem to get out of my room and out the door. I guess I'm nervous... I've never had an opportunity like this before!

It wasn't a love story, at least not for me. With events that began and ended with me and Alejandro. We rushed into things that was too intense for a couple of kids. We didn't know what being in a relationship really meant. In a perfect fairytale, the princess would get the prince but my life isn't a fairytale. I'll be taking you through a year in my llife. I slip out of my corner and into the now empty hallway, shutting the doors behind me. I race as fast as I can away from that interrogation room and tears stream down my face. I've tried so hard to be good. I've tried so hard to fit in. What have I done to deserve this? Lost in thought, I can't look where I'm going. My face connects with a human-feeling thing. "Emma?" Tyler asks and states. I look up into his cold eyes. "You?" I push past him, slamming my shoulder on his. Pain spikes through me, but all I can think about is getting out of here. There are black dots in my vision. I hear yells and calls after me, but they are faded. I burst through the first door I find. A mob of people await me, but they aren't about to arrest me. "Guys, I got another note," I say as I sit down at lunch. Vanessa and Xander were here but Hazel was missing. "Where's Hazel?" I question, eyeing her empty seat. "Out with Adam today, it's Friday," Xander says whilst I munch on my sandwich. "Did you say you got another note?" He asks and I hold my finger up and try to swallow my food as quickly I can so I can speak again. But my eyes move from Sebastien quickly to the hottest man in Waterstone, Vincent. He has been bugging me for a week, trying to talk to me and he even asked me to come to Logan's party on the weekend. My eyes must have been drilling holes into his face because he turns in my directions. I quickly turn back to Xander and Vanessa who were talking about their Art projects. "Okay, so if not Sebastien then who?" I voice my thoughts out loud. "Maybe you have a secret admirer," Xander says in all seriousness and I burst out laughing. " I'm sick of you putting your hands on me Johnny!" A loud gunshot went off, echoing around the house, and for the first time, it was quiet. No more door slamming, no more cleaning up my mother's blood off the walls, and no more fighting. I remember asking my mother "Are we free?" I swear it felt like Christmas or New Year's. All I can hear is cheering in my head or maybe ringing. For the first time in 12 years Mother and I were able to sleep that hot summer night in bed together. April's life changed once she saw her dad Johnny get murdered right in front of her, by her mother June. A self-defense case quickly turned to manslaughter and the law turned against June at the drop of a hat. June was sentenced to 25 to life, a then 14-year-old April was left alone. Her dad said didn't want anything to do with her as she was defending her mother and June never knew her parents as she grew up in group homes. April is now a 25-year-old private eye and teaches self-defence classes in honour of her mother. On her off days, she works at a gentleman's club called "The Claw" where she meets Derek Hill and their life is forever changed.
