Esmeralda's father just recently died from a car accident. Her mother, left with no other choice, decides to date Ray. A drunken, filthy, man who is also abusive. Soon they move in together. Esmerlada doesn't like it one bit and wishes to contact her 20 year old brother, Travis, across seas to tell him.
But she gets caught and her mother gets punished for it. Her mom then tells Esmeralda to just lie low and keep her head down. But Esmeralda is a spirited young girl and refuses to give up on trying to find a way out of that wretched household. But before she can come up with a decent plan, Ray springs a surprise. They're moving. To Florida.
