Generations have passed since humans implemented a powerful global technology: alter reality at a thought. Luos, nephew of the blacksmith of the village of Hill Hill, has become apprentice to the wizard Samsian and his talking cat familiar Peezlebub. He learns that while most people have some minor magical ability, the deeper magic requires the facilitation of a familiar, a daemon bound to a mortal body, able to navigate the spiritual world. But when Luos attempts the rite himself by summoning the daemon Asmod, proving to his teacher his capability in the occult, the daemon he binds besets the boy with a horrible truth. Daemons are not merely bound spirits. They are copies of the mage's own soul. Together Luos and Asmod must overcome the changes in their lives and master the magical arts, because Hill Hill comes under threat of a dark and evil force. Soon to be cross-posted to Royal Road!
