Rose Hathaway and Vasilisa Dragomir or Lissa ran away. Lissa's parents and Rose died in a in a car crash. Only Lissa and André survived the crash. But Lissa bring's Rose back to the living.

When they are on the run Rose makes sure she is trained to keep Lissa alive. They encounter two strigoi. When they are in Seattle Washington, psi hounds attack them and one kills Lissa.

Something triggers inside of Rose.

When they are brought back to the academy, Rose is suspicious of Victor Dashkov. When strange stuff starts happening at the academy Rose's suspicions lead to one person.

Rose will also find out she isn't a regular dhampir. She is something more. Much, much more. Something that hasn't been around for centuries.
