A novel about a dystopian world, where all the people with special talents are brought into an institution to be trained. Those without talents are left to live in the outside world in poverty. Five is a trainee in the institution, training in the area of combat because she can't feel pain. Things are beginning to take a turn for the worse. And the institution is preparing all the trainees for a war. Five has to figure out what's going on, and how she can save her family who is living in the outside world.
