It has been almost 10 years since Elena Gilbert's 'death'. Damon Salvatore had spent most of this time sulking in his room, feeling sorry for himself. He couldn't stand to be around Stefan, who was newly married to Caroline Forbes. And he certainly did not want to be around Bonnie. Mostly everyone has moved on with their lives, everyone but Damon. Life without Elena was a life he did not want to live.
