Skylar Kydson lives in a society where brown eyes are the cultural norm. In fact, any other eye colour- blue, green, grey,violet?- is unheard of. Coloured eyes are dangerous. If you happen to be unlucky enough to have hazel eyes, you live in poverty and must fend for yourself.
So Skylar knows she's in trouble when she see's a glimpse of herself with blue eyes in her bedroom mirror.
