Thirteen year old house elf, Edward is ten days away from being fourteen. When house elves turn fourteen they wait for the appointing ceremony that happens every three months. The next one happens to be on Edward's birthday. During the ceremony, names of the fourteen year olds not yet appointed are appointed a job. All who are not appointed or do not listen to their boss for their jobs are banished from the clan, and their family suffers the same punishment. Food is slowly running out in his clan and Edward realizes there is only one way to survive.
