Phil Lester is a nice, young boy who everyone wants to be friends with in the 6th grade. He's sweet, he's nice, he gets all As...He's also kinda in love with his best friend, Danielle.

Danielle Howell, who tends to go by Dani, is a mega tomboy who tends to make friends with only the boys in her classes. She'll never wear dresses, she'll never wear bows and headbands, she always keeps her hair short, but no one really cares.

Before Phil can confess his feelings to Danielle, she transfers for unknown reasons. Phil is now...lonely.

Fast forward to Sophomore year in highschool. Phil has all these new friends and he's almost forgotten about childhood crush, Danielle. Until she comes back into his life. But as Daniel, a gay transgender boy who's "finally found who he really was" in the 8th grade. Phil is introduced to this whole new world of sexuality, gender identity, and, most importantly, love.
