Their parents died, leaving a 16-year-old Bucky to care for his 6-year-old sister.  His childhood friend, Steve Rogers, gave Bucky and his sister a place to live: his place. Steve's parents were more than happy to have the Barnes siblings live with them. Time went on and Bucky eventually is able to get a place for himself and his sister. But when WWII starts and it becomes essential that Bucky enlist, he once again asks the Rogers parents to look after her.
