Really, everyone expects Nyx Gethen to be the top of his class, to be the top Reaper, and to be the top of his generation. He's supposed to be everything they expect but expectations are pointless when the expected haven't even been born. Then he's out of the womb as a Gethen, expected to feel nothing to punish the sinners in Hell.
Being a Reaper requires no guilt. No emotions. No mercy. But then, if the accused is as is, merciful, guilty, he must now take the Engel Test. It's simple really; pass, you stay in hell. Fail...well, Heaven awaits.
One slip. One step and seventeen words later, he has to take the test. His fiftieth generation run may just collapse on its spokes and his father has never been merciful. Never shown love like he has for his little sister and mother. It annoying really. But the first born of a Gethen must have shit like that piled high.
He must. If he can't...that's never happened. If he won't...now that's a different story...
