Legend has it that beyond the rolling hills of Mullingar, there lies a small cottage nestled inside the great trunk of a tree. That's right: inside the tree. Not a tree house, mind you, but a regular old cottage inside this particular tree trunk. Neat, huh? And what's even neater is that at night, when every foreboding grandfather clock stowed away in whatever dank corner, ominously strikes twelve, the sweet, mellifluous notes of an elder fiddle can be heard from inside the cottage. Then, not a minute later, a voice makes its debut.

I say debut, because at the beginning, it––the voice––sounds apprehensive, always as though it is on the verge of crying, “To hell with this!” and running away. But just when you think that, the voice grows unrecognizable, and you realize what a blunder you have committed for thinking such a thing.

It is the same voice, yes, but now that of a creature who owns her art. The foreignness of the voice you heard a minute ago is one that lights a sleeping hearth and makes the sun at ease amidst a canopy of stars. Clearer than your reflection in the crystalline brook that gurgles near the tree, and more soulful than birdsong coloring the pink of dawn, oho, it is a voice you most definitely do not wish to know to whom it belongs.

And with that, my lovely audience, I beg my leave.

My dream continued the one I'd been having for the past couple of nights. I ran, gasping for breath, through the familiar woods from a dark figure behind me. The faster I tried to run, the slower I seemed to go, until it was like I was running in place. I knew I needed to run. I was terrified of what the figure would do when he caught me. "Mara Leigh," a deep, smooth voice called. It was almost hypnotic. That was new. The figure had never spoke before now. I ran as fast as I could go, eyes searching the forest floor for a big stick or something that I could use to defend myself. "Mara Leigh!" the voice came again, this time more insistent. The forest slowly started to fade and I started to awake to someone shaking my shoulders. "Beau?" I mumbled, turning my head to the side. What's Beau doing in my room this time of night? Why is he shaking me? "Do not call me that name." My eyes flew open as I jumped at the voice from my dream. A face was right in front of mine, and just like the voice, it wasn't Beau. Before I could form a scream, a hand covered my mouth. I tried to bite it but I couldn't get my mouth to open. He's too strong. I started to use my whole body to try to get away, but he crawled on top of me, holding me down. I pulled the hidden knife out from under my pillow and slashed as hard as I could at him, but he just grabbed my wrist and squeezed it until the pain made me drop the knife. Then he grabbed both my hands in one of his and held them over my head. He held me down while I struggled. I grunted and moved and tried to kick and scream, but I only wore myself out. Exhausted, I stopped thrashing and let the tears flow freely down my cheeks. I didn't know what to do, so I just tried to prepare myself for whatever was coming.

"This is a nightmare, it's only a nightmare..." I say to myself as I try to catch my breath while leaning against a tall pine tree. Only for a moment do I stay in that position until I hear a twig snap. I quickly leap away from the tree and run as fast as I can. "Wake up (Y/N)! just wake up!!!" I think to myself. "You are awake my dear..." I hear that voice. That damn voice. "GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!" I scream. I continue to run past trees and hopping over large rocks. The mist in the air begins to get thicker as I continue this race. "Why me? out of all the people this had to happen to me!" my brain races with thoughts until my foot gets caught by a tree root sticking out of the ground. I fall hitting my head on a rock. My vision is blurry and I can feel a warm liquid begin to stream down my face. "My dear (Y/N), look what you have done to yourself. You shouldn't have tried to run away." the voice goes through my head again. I look around and see nothing but trees. "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" My voice begins to grow sore from the constant running and yelling. The sound of leaves crunching comes from behind me and I whip my head around until my eyes are met with him. "My dear (Y/N), you've made quite the mess of yourself. You know you are not aloud to leave......now you'll have to be punished." The figure says without any facial expression or motion. The figure begins to walk forward towards me. I try to back away until my vision becomes black and all I can hear is static.

"Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive. Her life isn't the kind anyone would want to live but she's managed to survive this long so, what's a few more years?
