Then, one night, which Alex has no remaining memory of, his brother and his parents die, leaving Alex on his own. Beneath the struggle with mental illnesses Alex is bullied by his homophobic classmates, making him slowly lose all hope. Luckily, Jack Barakat moves to Maryland, and happens to be in the same school and class as Alex. Will he be able to save Alex?
