In the early 1900's, an American Navy Lieutenant is given a fifteen year-old geisha bride, named Cio-Cio San, or Butterfly. Cio-Cio San has fallen madly for her new Western husband, but Pinkerton is suddenly ordered back to the States, leaving Cio-Cio San alone with her housemaid, Suzuki, for three years.
