Some have long assumed that civilization was the birthplace of religion. It is not so. It was the belief of a being that created us, that is watching us and wishing us well, that first brought people together. And thus, there has always been a tie between the government of nations and the faith of it's leaders. As one can imagine, such a connection can have disastrous consequences. Another factor that has persisted since the dawn of history is the simple stupidity of human stubbornness. Every person that has ever existed has had an opinion. Every conflict that has ever existed has been an unfortunate result of humans stubbornly sticking to their opinions. And their is no subject with more conflicted opinions than faith. To fight, to kill in the name of faith is the most terrible thing, and when the man who fights for his god is the unquestioned leader of millions, one may begin to question the fundamental ideas that have lead humanity since the dawn of time: follow those most powerful, and worship those most omnipotent.
