Something Eirica Sykes wants, more than anything, is a normal life - as a young, freelance, 'second-rate' mage blessed with extraordinary misfortune living in the site of the entrance to the strange dimension known as the alterworld, hers is anything but. Even without the mysterious underground vitaology and magecraft classes offered only in London or the odd supernatural detective job offered here and there, something surprising is always bound to happen.
In a city that has become the center of supernatural activity in the world, disappearances are common (and rarely long term). So when several civilians begin to vanish from the streets of London, no one, including Eirica, is concerned.
However, when Eirica herself narrowly escapes what reveals itself to be a kidnapping, she is unwillingly thrown into a web of chaos and confusion with a ragtag gang of misfit mages in order to investigate. Working together, they begin to uncover a series of buried secrets that may change the world - and the alterworld - forever.
