Max has always been on his own. He drifts aimlessly back and forth between locations, and he never has a reason to stay anywhere. Everywhere he goes he is reminded of the fact that he doesn't belong there. Not only because he sticks out. But due to the fact that everyone he sees is just an unfamiliar face. Max knows one guy in this town, that's Archer. Every time he sees Archer he's with Mallory, the girl who seems to be everyone's dirty little secret. Then one day Max sees him with another girl. At first he pays no attention, figuring she's just another girl to be Archer's eye candy. Then he notices that she's different. She doesn't look at Archer like a piece of meat. The girl looks at him like he's a moron. She isn't flaunting around like she's Miss Perfect, but looks insecure and innocent. All Max can do after seeing her is wonder what she's doing with someone like Archer. Max is beginning to realize that leaving doesn't fill the empty space. He needs to find a reason to stay. Carson is surronded by people. But not in the way that everyone desires. Sure, several girls would probably die for her life. She never looked at it like that, though. Although she hates everything around her, she's never had a reason to leave. Carson doesn't ever think about the excitement of being someone, somewhere else. She knows that there's not the slightest chance that she'll get out; she's stuck. Carson has never considered that staying is sometimes worse than taking a chance and turning the page
