Zeus is a Wolfeen tech agent working for unit 10 of the K9 agency. He and his team broke the case on hybrids when one of his fellow agents, Brock fell for one of the hybrids. Apparently much like the female Wolfreen, the human hybrids altered with Wolfeen DNA react exactly the same as born Wolfeen's. Only to a much more dangerous degree. When a hybrid meets their fated mate, they go into heat, and because they can't handle it, if they aren't mated quickly the heat can cause permanent damage to their brain function, internal organs, and even death. As if that threat isn't enough, Webb is still hunting the hybrids under K9 protection.

The team plans to visit many known sites of hydrothermal vents using a device called the MAPR, searching vents for a bacterium that seems promising in use as a way to fight carbon dioxide emissions. But one of the two junior scientists on the team soon realizes that secrets are being kept, and makes promises to keep some, while learning that some onboard have entirely different agendas. To complicate matters, this junior scientist's desire for a special friendship grows in intensity, just as mysterious murmurings and strange sightings intensify.
