Nicole didn't ask her brother to introduce her to his old university buddy. But when she met Phil, her brother's old buddy, she didn't regret coming along.
When Nicole and Phil became best friends and when she then needed a place to stay after her brother hurt her (in more ways than one), she didn't ask Phil if she could stay with him. He offered and she graciously accepted. And she didn't regret that when she get closer to Dan, Phil's flat mate.
Nicole never asked Dan to love her, or stay with her, or even hold her hand.
