Nightingale is a pup- just a helpless newborn- when she is abandoned. Left stranded in a human village, she is taken in by a kind elderly female wolf-dog, who takes every opportunity to tell the wolf pup stories of the wolf packs. She knows one day, she won't be able to protect her from the less understanding humans, and she must go.
