Like a sister

"Tell me the truth." Chase demands softly. Then something in me just bursts.
"What do you want to know?" I say desperately, "Do you want to know how being around you makes me uncomfortable? How the only thing that keeps popping into my head is you and Jessica? How looking at you and Jessica makes me feel jealous? I never asked for this to happen. I never even wanted this to happen. But it did and I'm sorry." All the anger and pain I felt are gone. I don't dare to look at Chase's face.
"You say, you've been avoiding me, because you have a crush on me?" he asks carefully.
"Yes, are you happy now?" I say, feeling desperate.
"No, of course I'm not happy. I just hope I did nothing to make you think that I feel... I mean you're like a sister to me. And Jessica..." Chase's voice trails off. The look in his eyes makes me feel hopeless. He'll never love me more than as a sister.
"I know." I say softly, "Can I just finish these papers now?" Chase nods and lets me pass.
When I turn around I see him walking through the door. What had I done? I promised myself I wouldn't let him know about me. I messed up and not for the first time this week.
