"I can't be with someone who hates me Ethan!" He turned into a blurred vision as the unwanted tears filled my eyes. I could feel the frustration radiating from his tense body as I edged away from his touch.

"You know I don't hate you!" I could hear the anger building in his voice, his already tense demeanour becoming even more rigid.

"But your family does! I can't be with someone who comes from a family that can't accept who I am. I just can't!"
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               ------------------------------------------------------------

"What?" Ethan says in his all too familiar deep, rude voice. Ethan has pitch-black hair, is 6 feet tall, with a solid build. His deep grey eyes are glaring at me right now. His jawline is so sharp I'm sure it can cut through anything. "You hit me, spilling my coffee all over me," I say, pointing out the obvious. "So, what do you want me to do about it?" he asks, like he's done nothing wrong. "You're supposed to say sorry," I say in a duh tone. "And why should I?" "Because that's what people with manners do." "I know that, but you don't deserve a sorry from me." "Wow. And why is that?" "Because black bitches like you don't deserve it," he says with a sneer. "I have told you times without number to stop calling me that," I say, angry at his insults. "Make me," Ethan says, taking a dangerous step closer. I don't say anything but hiss and walk past him. I don't know why I expected him to apologize. It's Ethan, after all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ethan is a young male about to get his first degree, he might look normal to the world, but don't we all have our demons inside. Angie snapped, as the graffiti covered trains roared by. "What do you see in me, anyway? I'm like any other black girl on the street!" "You really want to know what I see in you, Angela?" Austin spoke up. "I see a woman, a beautiful, smart, caring woman, with a fine sense of humor and with a good soul. That's what set you apart from all other women, not just black women that I have crossed paths with in my lifetime," he said. Tears threatened to form in Angie's eyes at his words. "I also see a woman who's been hurt so many times, that she's afraid to be close to the source," Austin continued. "Well, I'll have you know, Austin, that I am a grown woman, I'm not afraid of anything," Angie retorted with bravado. "Oh? So then why do you keep pushing me away?" Austin asked coldly. "Why can't you let me love you?" ****************************************************************************************** Set in New York City in the early 1980s, college graduate Angie Carver meets young, handsome plumbing trainee Austin Phillips on the bus. Will Austin and Angie rise above or will their love crumble before it begins?
