As an only child who is raised by his grandparents, Etienne Dubois lived a sheltered life. Like other kids, Etienne has always tried just to fit in. Entering fifth grade, he is immediately intrigued by the new girl. Seren Ala is different from everyone else. She struggles to fit in. Etienne is quick to befriend this girl and finds himself mesmerized by her confidence, intelligence, humour, and the way she is unapologetically herself. However, his friends all see her through the same corrupted lens media puts on society and find it hard to accept her. Etienne finds himself in a pickle as he continually has to choose between the new girl who makes him feel free like a king and his best friends he's known all his life. All he can think is, 'Why can't they all just be friends?'
