Some things are too coincidental to ignore. This story is based on one such event. I owned one Matt Nathanson album, At the Point. It is one of the very few live albums I own and that is because he is wicked funny and charming on the album. From the photo on the front he has always been a boy in my mind who wore tan corduroys and cardigans. He was an amalgam of all the boys I knew in fifth grade wearing the same type of horizontal striped shirt that all boys my age wore in third through fifth grade; the same one that Ernie of Sesame Street wears. I was at work one day doing a very repetitive task and turned on theriverboston.com to listen to some music to move the task along. On the side bar was a video of Matt Nathanson performing live at the Newburyport Riverfront Festival. I was shocked to see him with dark, wavy hair and a nose ring. He was a bad boy not a little boy in tan corduroys. The videos ran back to back for three songs and I looped them again. I learned that he is from MA just like me, in fact the town right next to the one I lived in til I was 7. I couldn't shake the images from the video or the fact that the venue was in one of my favorite towns and if I still lived in New England I would have been there and seen him live then headed to the Grog with my friends after the show. This new infatuation caused me to look for his latest album. I found that Target had an extended one so instead of digital I ordered it from Target and when it arrived the song, Kinks Shirt, was about being infatuated with someone and the lovely stories your imagination creates. This is the lovely story my brain had worked up in the few days this all took to transpire. I will throw in song lyrics along the way and hopefully some Matt Nathanson fans will join in and point them out. If you don't know who he is check him out. He is great, especially live. Enjoy!
