15 year old Leah Johnson witnessed her parents murder and was kidnapped. She has been missing for 5 hours. Detectives have been looking for only 1 hour and are ready to give up. Until, they get a call from an anonymous number saying that they have Leah. NYPD call in the BAU (behavioural analysis unit) to help them profile the kidnapper. 

The kidnapper reaches the NYPD by phone calls and notes, taunting the BAU, showing he's the one in control. The BAU realise that there is more than one kidnapper and Leah isn't his only target. 

Meanwhile the agents are dealing with their own personal problems.
