The kingdom of Barandia has been taken over by foreign enemies. King Thaddeus and Queen Jessabelle die in an attempt to protect their kingdom  and their eldest son, Prince Ivan, the crown prince and heir to the throne. It is said that Dragon Keepers still live there, and Prince Ivan has Dragonsfire in his blood.
