From a young age, Juniper learned to deal with life’s disappointments, by repressing her emotions and trusting only the thing she could control and understand. Her academic achievements.
Unlike Juniper, Oliver threw himself into life with as much emotional ability as he could, but with some deep seated anger issues, he was  consequently nicknamed 'The Hulk'.
Juniper chooses not to engage with others, not finding any point in it, while Oliver has no concept of how to. 
But it takes only one meet between the two, to see the immediate attraction. And to see the unlikely pair begin to break out of their lonely shells and discover the meaning of really living.
