Gale Hastings was an only child. She didn't get into fights with her parents and she was friends with almost everyone that walked through the doors of her school. She was top of her class and was all set to go to a college close by so she wouldn't have to leave her family behind. Owen Fox was also an only child. He rarely spoke to his parents but he rarely spoke at all so no one quite knew what he was thinking or feeling. He was kind of a social outcast and never did his homework. Gale and Owen have been neighbors since they were four and their parents had been friends longer than that. As children, Gale and Owen had a weird friendship. Gale would say hello or tell him a story about her day as they sat on the opposite side of the privacy fence and Owen would maybe say two words. She didn't mind though. The summer before their senior year, tragedy struck. A birthday outing for Gale's mom cost both seniors to become orphans. They realize that the best thing to help them heal might be to lean on each other but in order to do that, they must figure out what they mean to each other all while dealing with the grief from losing their parents and trying to get their lives back to normal.
