Starkey was born....different.

Sure, you'd think being raised a street rat was hard luck but Starkey would give anything to go back to dodging cops and stealing to survive then live a second longer with Mitchell and Patrick Grimes. They took him from the street just to have him steal and collect for them. And if he doesn't get what they want, there are terrible consequences.

And to top it all off, Starkey wasn't always in the street or with the Grimes. He was born in a lab, taken from his parents and tested on. Now, ever since he escaped from the lab at the mere age of seven, all he felt was cold. Having literal ice run through your veins would do that to you.

But with the Grimes, it's only gotten worse....the cold is becoming more harsh and burning. Now he needs to escape and get far, far away.....because having a frozen heart.....would give anyone cold feet.

"Does it hurt to die?" she whispered to me. I thought long and hard about my response. Finally, when the correct words formed in my mouth, I said: "Yeah, but it hurts more to keep living." Welcome to my world. ~~~~~ It was a perfect life. A big, beautiful house in the richer part of town. Two loving, happy parents. A dog that was potty trained and seemed to know when to be so cute and cuddly. A school filled with only the smartest students and most professional teachers. Friends who would never do any harm to anyone. Money coming easily and the weather always staying nice. It was the perfect life. Anything anyone could have wanted. Avaley Camber lived this perfect life. Lived. Thing is, when you die, you are not supposed to come back to life. But the Creator has something special in mind for Avaley Camber. Something far more greater than staying dead forever. It's a second chance. Avaley didn't necessarily want to come back from the dead, but if it's better than being in a coffin all her life it's something she says yes to. What she doesn't know, however, is the other parts that come with coming back to life. And Avaley realizes that she's going to need her whole life to get used to the new parts. As Avaley starts to relive her life again, she's faced with new challenges and new changes in her life. Her life that seemed so perfect has its own flaws. New things keep popping up in front of Avaley, and it's up to her to work her way through them. With the help of her new powers, that is.

"Please . . . don't cry. You had to have known I'd do this at some point." *** Parker Sims is the class clown but that doesn't mean he's easy to fool. And that's just what Nola B. is good at - fooling people. She's got the whole school believing that her scars, bruises, and broken bones are from being clumsy. However, Parker sees through the lies. He knows there's another reason why she flinches at the touch of other people, the way she's alert and watchful, how she wears long sleeves (even in the middle of the summer), or even the way she keeps losing weight, staggering to an unhealthy size. Parker saw all the signs; it killed him from the inside out to know what she was going through. So, he called the cops and reported his suspension that Nola was being abused. That was a total joke, he found out... Parker thought of everything in the book but each attempt, to get someone to notice she was being abused, failed - epically. He'd no other options . . . except for one thing. . . Kidnap her - take her away from whoever was abusing her; give her the life she deserves. It was a crazy idea, and he knew it - that's exactly why he shook the idea out of his head. . . That was until he saw her come to school with a black eye and limping while holding her sides. Parker snapped and did the one thing he swore he'd never do- Kidnap Nola B., for her own protection. *** Warning: Contains abuse and harsh language.
