Joy laid curled on the floor covering her stomach to protect her unborn child. She screamed as she took the blows from Eugene's abuse. The Vietnam vet battled to contain his mental illness. He pulled his arm back and with a swift Her three young boys watched helplessly as their mother endured the ongoing abuse. Joy was finally was able to plea for help to her family in Utah who came to her rescue in the small Oklahoma town. Once home, Joy finished out her pregnancy and tried to prepare for life as a single mother of four. Then on a warm August morning, Joy awoke to the the pains of labor. She had been told by her sister just one day prior not to go into labor until she got back from her vacation. Joy laid in the hospital bed breathing through each contraction. She imagined what other laboring mothers had with them... a husband, parents, excited family and friend. The thought stung as her only support were nurses who she'd just met. A scream filled the room from a little girl who was less than pleased with the process of birth. "What's her name, Joy?" Joy replied breathlessly, "Mary, her name is Mary." Joy took her new baby home to meet her three big brothers. Life settled in and life was hard. The boys began to make serious trouble throughout the town as the dysfunction resulting from poor parenting, mental illness, and neglect unfolded. Although Mary was only a small child she felt pain even adults dread.
