SECTION 1 " said Perry ...a voice that, though soft , manufactured each word exactly , ejected it like a smoke ring issuing from a parson's mouth" (23) I believe that this metaphor alludes to the smoke Nancy Clutter smelled(19) . And i think that Capote is going to continue a smoke motif throughout the book. the author is using this metaphor to introduce religion as a theme in the book. The smoke motif is an inventive way of foreshadowing that the two story lines intersect. " Truly serpentine .... bitter sediment at the bottom of his nature ... unnerving personality " (31) The author's diction sways the perception of Hickock to have a more negative, sinister , vibe than Smith . using words like 'serpentine ' to show that he is more conniving than his partner. Dick is described by the author as being hard, slick , and unnerving , while Perry is described as gentle and eloquent . " She had never know him to 'act the squire' , or to take advantage" (36)

So hope u guys don't mind the cringe. If there are some parts in the chapters that y'all don't understand, that's because I made this book BEFORE everything about the characters were confirmed.
