It was just after the war with Shao Kahn as Johnny and Sonya bid their farewell's to one another. But Sonya left with confusion. After she had said goodbye, she felt a feeling of loss and as of she was wandering. She vowed to find out why she felt this way.
As for Johnny, he actually was wandering. He tried to go home but then realized there was nothing left of it. The invasion destroyed everything. 
But what happens when they cross paths not long after they left the tournament and left behind everything that remained?
