The kingdom of Mare has prospered since the monarchy was created one hundred years ago. In all that time, though, there has always been an heir. Until now.
The king and queen, childless rulers of Mare, need an heir - and they know that installing the Grand Duke onto the throne would bring dissent to their kingdom. The history books, detailing Mare before it was Mare, give them an answer in the Hunger Games - a tradition from years ago, sending twenty-four children into an arena to fight to the death. With a few changes, King Harold decides that this is the best way to find an heir.
Twenty-four go in, each wanting the crown. Only one can come out and rule the castle.
