This story follows a 16 year old boy named Jake who comes from a militant, conservative Christian family. In a world where he has to choose between pleasing his parents and God or pleasing himself and his peers, he finds himself torn. He ends up going down a very dark path and struggles greatly to find the light and the end to his suffering. By doing so, he tends to make things much worse before they start getting better.

Luka Ember-O'Doyle and Jake Fenic's lives were hell. Luka's mother was killed before his eyes, and his father is a druggie alcoholic who abuses him; he even tries to kill him. He's the only one who fixes the house and the vehicles, he works, he cooks, he looks after his siblings, and he gets high to forget his problems. Jake is the hated child of Jonathan and Lita Fenic, and the target of his adoptive sister, Andrea. And for some strange reason, he can't even die. Why can't he just die? Since his dad is also an abusive, druggie alcoholic, Jake gets high, since he's lonely. Perhaps it was fate that they met each other. Jake could either be the death of Luka or the salvation. Luka could fix Jake, or he could break him. They could be crazy to fall for each other...or completely insane to play this lovesick version of Russian Roulette. This has heartbreak written all over it. Pain, fright, laughing, crying, bloodstained and twisted memories fill the chapters of their life. But a fire can reignite, and the stars will always shine.
