But when Old Jamie seeks his help, he can't deny the old man his request and sets off to find the girl he'd not set eyes on since they were children, and only once at that. 

Avalynn is that girl, not that she knows who is coming for her, all she knows is that she has to be ready. Even if it means lugging around weaponry much too large for her frame.
