Air is an essential part of life. We need air in our lungs to breathe and plants to create the oxygen that is produced into the air that we breathe. It's a cycle that's constantly repeated day by day.

But what happens when one single soul upon the millions on planet earth manages to steal your breath away just by words on a piece of paper? Do you stop breathing or do you breathe normally but easier? Or do you continue to breathe the same air but see life in a new light?

Your answers will be answered along with mine when you embark on this journey with me. A journey that started in a form of a single letter that lead to more letters going back and forth between Oklahoma to New York, a journey from two people completely different people that just so happens to connect so well through shared thoughts.

'You live a life far better than mine from what I can tell. How is it that I entice you in any way possible. I just don't see it. Compared to you, I'm just... Painfully me.'

Sixteen years ago, my sisters and I moved from France to the United States to live the American dream. Not long after, I met Declan, a marine who was home for his mother's funeral. He was my everything, my world, and the love of my life. Four and a half years later, I became his fiancée. Then, when I thought everything was going well, my world ended when I awoke to him gone. No note, no nothing. He was just gone. I waited days, weeks, and months to hear from him and for his return. That never happened. Then, I met Chadwick, who took the pieces of my broken heart and put them back together. He promised me many things during our dating years, guaranteeing he'd give me the world. And he was. Then, after years of not wanting to give my entire heart to him, fearing he'd do what Declan had done, I pushed the fear of him leaving me aside and married him. The night we married, instead of giving me the world he promised, I was gifted a nightmare. For over six years, I lived in a lake of fire. If I wasn't locked in a dark, cold room for days on end, day and night, I was tormented, punished, abused, and tortured in the blackest darkness until I could no longer see, talk, or move. Maltreating me until he broke me. Finally, one of my prayers was answered when an ally close to Chadwick helped me escape the prison of hell. She flew me out of New York and brought me to her friend's home in Mobile, Alabama, where I got the shock of my life. He wasn't just her "friend." He was a ghost from my past, and now I'm in his care. Oh, and he has a child nearly as old as our breakup.

Death is a cruel, unbiased monster that only understands what it is to take. Addiction is strange. It is being hung on something that you know will only end up hurting you in the end. You keep coming back because despite knowing it will be your demise; you can't stop. It's the high of feeling with your drug of choice. There's no such thing as moderation with an addict. It's all or nothing. Love is mischievous. It pounces on you when you least expect it, grips your heart and messes with your head when you don't want it to. Even when you're terrified of receiving another broken heart, love doesn't give you a choice in the matter. No matter how hard you fight it. A woman, with fire in her past and a tongue as sharp as a razor blade, and a man, misjudged by his upbringing with a seemingly stone heart, fall victim to the big three. Together, they navigate a world of hatred and violence and learn that love exists in this cruel world in each other. He's never been taught what it is to love. She's terrified of ever loving again because it only hurts her in the end. They were both survivors long before the world fell apart. Little do they know, they will toss caution to the wind and give into their desires because that's what they always do. Like smoking a cigarette. *This is a DarylDixonxOC Fanfiction.
