Running in Circles

She walked through the dimly lit hallways, her fingers running across the imperfect walls. The echo of her shoes hitting the concrete was unsettling, but it was too late to go back. At the end of the hall was a room with a door slightly ajar, and she could see the shadows pacing back and forth, the hum of voices becoming louder. She had come for Orpheus, braving the underworld to save the man she loved. But as he came into view and their eyes locked, the scales tilted. She stared longingly at him, beckoning him with her eyes, but he did not let her in. For every step she took, he took one back. He didn't want to be saved.
She was not his Eurydice.
