Ashley Thomas always smiled, but behind that smile hid her true feelings. She always used to find a way to make ends meet, but after a failed attempt at suicide, she is put in the mental ward for observation. While in the mental ward, she gets a letter from her hospital assigned pen pal, Dan Howell. He tries so hard to break down her walls, but after sharing so much of her life with people on the internet she doesn't even know, she won't give up so easily.

Dan is a college drop out who always wanted to make people smile. So when the news advertised giving people in hospitals pen pals, he immediately called in. When he first meets Ashley, he knew he would make a difference. But how would he break through her walls she built up?
