Stuck in Dubai (#Wattys2015)

They’ve been saving up for this summer trip—Courtney and Aaron—since they were together two years and seven months ago. They would walk home from school together hand in hand, and put half, if not all, of their allowances in a coin bank labeled ‘Dubai.’ It was then at the end of senior year when they realized they finally had enough money to go, with the help of their cousins and other relatives that guided them to find an affordable hotel. Everything was planned and the two of them were all set, both of them being happy and ecstatic as ever. After all, Dubai is where all the magic happens . . .

Until Courtney was forced to face the streets alone. There was nobody holding her hand anymore, nobody grabbing her by the waist and kissing her on the forehead. Aaron went back to Oklahoma for what he claimed was an emergency.

And he said he’d never leave her.

She doesn’t have enough money to go back to Oklahoma—Aaron took all of their savings for a ticket. All she had by her side was an emergency credit card that barely had anything in it, and the faith that maybe, just maybe—with the help of Elijah (and two old people)—she could find the magic in Dubai she’s been believing in and looking for ever since she was a kid.
