Wanneer de seriemoordenaar Charles Lee Ray 's avonds dodelijk gewond raakt tijdens een beschieting door de detective Mike Norris, spreekt hij voor hij aan zijn verwondingen bezwijkt in de speelgoedwinkel een voodoo-spreuk uit over 1 van de geliefde "good guy poppen", om zijn ziel over te plaatsen naar de pop. Hierna word de winkel getroffen door de bliksem en brand af.
Niet lang daarna krijgt een jongen die Andy Barclay heet voor zijn zesde verjaardag als cadeau de behekste pop met Rays geest erin, Chucky genaamd, die zijn moeder - de weduwe Karen Barclay - heeft gekocht van een straatventer die de pop in de uitgebrande winkel had gevonden. Andy draagt de pop 24 uur per dag bij zich. Deze Chucky begint echter al snel te moorden.. Waardoor Andy de schuld krijgt, en daardoor in een psygisch ziekenhuis terecht komt. Maar Chucky komt wraak nemen, want Andy heeft zijn mond niet gehouden...
