Thomas, a well built 16 year old boy, wakes up in a box, unaware of who he is or where he is. Then he meets Newt, a very muscular and good looking 17 year old glader. At first they both pretty much hate each other, but when Newt's life is threatened by another glader, Thomas' feelings change completely.

Conflict arises when the stability of the Glade is disrupted by attacks from Grievers and internal tensions among the boys, exacerbated by Thomas's emerging memories and his role in challenging the status quo. He remembers his involvement in the Maze's creation as part of a secretive organization, W.C.K.D., whose experiments on the Gladers were aimed at finding a cure for a deadly virus, the Flare.
