The beginning of the Forging of a Knight series! (A 2013 Eric Hoffer Award Finalist!)

A battle against the forces of Those That Stand in Shadow brings an end to an old hero and a beginning for a new one. Together with a half-orcne thief named Glaive, a young warrior named Qualtan must battle through undead hordes, shape-shifting maugs, hungry trolls, and more on his journey to become a knight. Along the way, he learns the world isnt as simple as he first thought. Good and evil are not always what they seem, close friends can be deadly enemies, and loyalty can sometimes be rewarded with treachery. Even if Qualtan can grow from these lessons, a greater one will need to be faced: can an unexpected friendship with a thief of orcne blood, despised by all, support his chance for knighthood, or ruin it altogether?

Ashton is haunted by his grief and struggles focusing on anything else. To make matters worse, he keeps having dreams about the glowing winged figure repeating the same phrase: protect the savior. Beatrice has grown confident in her ability to control her fire magic. With Julian's ongoing training, she has also become better at wielding a sword. But she's suspicious of Julian's constant disappearances and the string of deaths that keep occurring throughout Aristol. So, when Ashton nearly meets his fate at the hands of Infernum cantivat, Beatrice awakens another power whilst rescuing him. They realize their connection may be deeper than they originally believed. There also may just be something far more sinister about Infernum cantivat than them merely being a group of criminals.
