In this world, only two things are certain. One, that you have a soulmate out there, somewhere in the world. Two, their final words are written on your arm. Everyone has a quote. Your parents do. Your siblings do. Your neighbors do. The leaders of the world do. The homeless child on the street does too. Those words engraved on their arms written in eternal black ink are there from birth, and no one really knows why they're there. What we do know, is that when someone says their final words before the last glimmer of life leaves their bodies and they match the ones on your arm, your soulmate is gone, and you may have not even known it was them. Or, maybe your the one dying, and the words on your arm are the last words your soulmate will ever get you to hear.
Usually, it's something along the lines of, "I love you," or maybe, "I'll miss you." Then you have the ones where it's seems like they died unexpectedly, like, "I'm off to work, babe!" or even, "It's okay, it's just down the block." But then you have quotes like mine. You can't tell what happened to them. You don't know if they were grasping onto your hands as they slowly died beneath you, or if they were in hospital being lifted off life support. Anything could have been happening in that instance.
I don't know their gender. I don't know their name. I don't know what they look like, how their voice will sound to my ears, if I will be friends with them at first or hate them with a passion. All I know is that the last things they will ever say to me will leave one of us dead and the other scarred for life.
