We all know that the ninja of Konohagakure start out in teams of three, with a squad leader of Jounin status.
 
We also know that the people who fail to meet the ninja standards based upon the ninja ranked of Jounin teacher's survival test, they are either sent back to the academy, or they are dropped from the ninja program.

When three ninja rejects fail to meet the ninja standards, instead of going back to the academy, or quitting the ninja lifestyle, they  decide to run away from Konoha.  They  then form Team R. and set out upon the world to prove that their disabilities will not hold them back from becoming ninja.

The only problem is; one is deaf, one is missing an arm, and one has a disease that prevents them from ever forming muscle.
