She was born to Krishnan and Maaya a Tamil Iyer couple her uncle was popular Tamil actor and political Critic Mr.Cho Ramaswamy. She has a sister named Vinaya Krishnan. Ramya Krishnan born on15th September 1967. She is one of the most successful commercial actresses in Indian film industry especially in south Indian movies. She is trained Bharathanatyam, kuchipudi and western dancer. She has given lot of stage performances. She discontinued her studies when she was in her 8th standard to pursue her acting career. 

From 1983 to till date she has acted in many movies and in many characters in all the Tamil, telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi Languages. So far she has acted in more than 120 movies.  She was a judge in a dancing show on STAR Vijay: Jodi Number One, season 1, followed by season 5. She played lead role in several SunTV serials such as Kalasam, Thangam, Rajakumari and Vamsam. Her game show Thanga vettai in sun TV is very popular among ladies. 
Such talented actress is not out of controversies, young and adolescent Ramya Krishnan was guided by popular comedy actor Y.G.Mahendran a rumor spread all over the industry about their relationship since she is a relative to Cho.Ramaswamy and Y.G.Mahendran is a relative to rajinikanth it is said that they came to an amicable settlement and Ramya Krishnan was sent to Telugu Industry. After many fantastic roles and hit movies she was brought again by Superstar Rajinikanth in his movie Padayappa. After her performance in Padayappa she became very big star in the south Indian film industry. Even though Rajinikanth gave her chance it was director K.S.Ravikumar made her a big star through her other films too. During this part of her career she become close to K.S.Ravikumar and it is said they both were in close relationship. This become high controversy in the industry and it is told that K.S.ravikumar wife threaten Ramya Krishnan.
