Trained from boyhood to be protectorate of the only known community to survive the Third Holocaust, Blaze's world is turned upside down when he discovers thousands more survivors than he knew about.

Chosen to accompany Dr. Boyd on a top secret mission, Blaze discovers not only that there are more survivors outside his Order but that Dr. Boyd is nefariously planning to take only a few recruits with him to colonize a new planet - while leaving everyone else to meet their untimely deaths. And although Blaze and his crush have been chosen to colonize the new planet, he can't peacefully agree to leaving his family and friends behind.

After failing to protect the Order from an unexpected attack, Blaze finds himself accused of treason, targeted by Toka's secret gene splicing experiments, and falling deeper and deeper into trouble. As his complicated life unravels, he begins to wonder whether anything he was taught to believe was ever more than fiction.

Blaze is further thrown into confusion when he discovers his renowned skills in weaponry and martial arts are useless against the mysterious powers of a small alien humanoid whose name no one can pronounce - at least, not without two separately functioning mouths. And as Blaze's efforts to save his fellow Order members intensify, he discovers that the ever gentle Evelia (the unexpected "apprentice" of the "magic woman" and Blaze's unquenchable crush) will become his protector - not the other way around.

Reality is uncertain, deceptions abound, and little is as it really seems.
